Medium Silk on linen with cross, herringbone, rice, hemstitch, Algerian eye, and queen stitches; thread count is 30 horizontal, 30 vertical
Provenance The sampler was made by Lucretia Bevins in approximately 1843. It is being sold by Christopher H. Jones, American Antiques, Folk & Fine Art for Private Collector #44.
Description The sampler has nine rows of alphabets and numbers separated by simple to minimally ornate crossbands. Row nine terminates in a folky bird and below this is the signature line, “Lucretia Bevins”. A moderately ornate crossband of vine and berries separates the signature from a quaint and well executed scene of trees, grass, flowers, bird, fence, and a five bay, dual chimney house. The entirety of the above is surrounded by a thoughtful, symmetric, six-layer, cross stitch border.
