The donor to the Filson Historical Society by handwritten note states that the sampler was made "...at the county school of Danville..." in Boyle County, Kentucky where, like Mercer County, the Braxdale and Ripperdan families have an extensive history. Malinda Braxdale was born on January 3, 1817 in Mercer County, Kentucky. Her parents were John Basil Braxdale, Jr, (born December 25, 1777 in York County, Pennsylvania and died July 2, 1847 at Braxdale Farm, Danville, Boyle County Kentucky) and Martha "Mattie" Ripperdan, (born October 10, 1775 in York County, Pennsylvania and died May 8, 1859 at the Braxdale Farm, Danville, Boyle County, Kentucky).
The Ripperdan homestead is still present as seen in the ancillary twentieth century images as well. The image of the home with surrounding farmland reflects a 2013 restoration.
One of the ancillary images is a copy of the Braxdale 1000 acre premption of Dec 17, 1781 given to Malinda's grandfather, John Basil Braxdale, Sr. It was in Survey Bk 1, p 110 and reads:
Surveyed for John Brasdel heir at Law for John Braxdal, dec'd 1000 acres of Land by virtue of a preemption warrant no. 1314 situate lying and being in the county of Lincoln on the waters of Harrods Ck, a branch of Dicks River & on the waters of Salt River Ck, a branch of Dicks River & on the waters of Salt River...including the plantation whereon John Kinkead now lives.

Two twentieth century pictures of the Braxdale home are seen in the ancillary images as is a modern description of the homestead. The home was constructed in 1801 and is shown in the oblique photograph taken in 1988 by Glenda Potts Thacker. It is known historically as the Spears House, because they owned it after the Braxdales. It is evident from the signs on the facade that the front had a long porch at one time that has been replaced by the existing porch.

Malinda married Charles Cannon (born Jan 16, 1813 in Mercer County, Kentucky) on September 19, 1836 in Perryville, Boyle County, Kentucky (see the marriage bond for Malinda Braxdale and Charles Cannon in the ancillary images). This marriage produced eleven children.
Charles Cannon died January 16, 1858 in Ohio County, Kentucky. Malinda married Charles's half brother John Wesley Cannon (1804-1872), on Dec 16, 1863 in Ohio County, Kentucky where Malinda had removed. There are no reported children of this marriage.
Malinda died on February 4, 1890 in Ohio County, Kentucky and is buried at Horse Branch, Ohio County, Kentucky.
Extensive genealogy is available on public genealogy sites.
