Description
The sampler has six rows of alphabets and numeral separated by decorative crossbands. The “letters” in the third line are unusual and difficult to identify but may simply reflect highly stylized script, but this is uncertain. (Viewer opinions would be appreciated by AKS.) Both the front and the verso of this line are included in the ancillary images as are the inverse verso of this line, and the verso and inverse verso of the entire sampler. The signature reads:

Cynthia Ann Hill was born in 1851 in Nelson County, Kentucky. Her father, William, (1808-1895) was forty-three years old and her mother, Mary M. Devers (1816-1889), was thirty-five. They married on August 10, 1834. Cynthia had seven siblings, Mary A. (1838-1866), Stephen (ca.1839-?), John Stephen (1841-?), Catherine E. (1844-?), Sarah (1846-?), William (1846-?) and Susan Alice (1852-1906).

Cynthia Ann married Robert Boone (1849-?) of Nelson County, Kentucky on December 28, 1874, in her hometown. They had two children, Charles (1875-?) and Joseph A. (1879-?) during their marriage.

Cynthia Ann Hill died on November 10, 1934, in Nelson County, Kentucky, at the age of eighty-three.

Cynthia Hill, daughter of William Hill, is in the account books for Loretto Academy in 1865. In the ancillary images see the middle of page 44. It appears she attended the Academy in both spring and fall of 1865. Another daughter of William Hill, Sue A. (Susan Alice), attended the academy in spring 1867 and her entry is seen lower right of another page in the Loretto Academy account book. Cynthia and Sue A. Hill both had "canvas and crewels" entries which one might assume would be for working samplers. (AKS is indebted to Susanna Pyatt, Curator, Loretto Heritage Center, Nerinx, KY for the above documents.)
