Description
This undated sampler has seven rows of alphabets and numbers separated by narrow and mildly decorative crossbands. Cross, basket, anchor, heart, and modified heart motifs are noted. At the end of sixth line is the signature:
M. DEPPEN
While numerals occupy the latter one-third of the seventh line, the first portion has significant thread loss and the letters cannot be confidently identified.
The last line reads:
Presantation Academy
Enrollment records at Presentation Academy, in Louisville, Kentucky and at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in Nazareth, Kentucky do not begin until 1892. Records from 1892 moving forward fail to show a student named M. Deppen at Presentation Academy. (Mother Catherine Spalding, from the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, opened Presentation Academy in 1831, the first Catholic school in the city. For further history, please see the entry for Sr. Mary Frances Price on the AKS Collection page.)
There are however several listings for M. Deppen on genealogical websites dating from 1831 to the late 1800s. Given the available information, AKS suspects the sampler could be attributed to Maria Theresia Deppen or her niece, Mary Theresa Deppen, but this is only educated conjecture.
Maria Theresia Deppen was born July 11, 1831 in Hopston, Westphalia Prussia and emigrated to America in 1836 with her father Johan Georg Heinrich Deppen (1788-1856) and her mother Maria Theresia Hespelink (?-1841). Her siblings included George Henry (1816-1879), John Lucas (1824-1892), Joseph (1820-1901) and possibly a sister, Maria Elizabeth Deppen (?-?), who also could be the sampler maker.
There is no history of Maria Theresia Deppen marrying or having children. She died on February 7, 1904 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.
An alternate sampler maker is Mary Theresa Deppen, born December 26, 1845 in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father, George Henry (1816-1879), was twenty-nine years old (and the brother of the above described Maria Theresia Deppen [7/11/1831-2/7/1904]), and her mother, Mary Rosalie (Rosa) Weyd (Woide) (1821-1899), was twenty four. Her siblings included Joseph Henry (1843-1844), Louis George (1847-1919), Charles A. (Carl) (1849-1931), Henry (1853-1883), William (D?)(1855-1870), Julia (1859-1903), Hattie Clare Rosalia (1861-1887), and Arthur Lee (1864-1902).
She married Pierre Viglini (1841-1915) in 1869. Their children included Henry P. (1869-1918), Albert L. (1871-?), Arthur J. (1873-?), Marcalina (Marcia) (1877-?), Edward (1881-?), Louis G. (1883-?), and George (1888-?).
Mary Theresa Deppen died on December 16, 1926, in Louisville, Kentucky at the age of eighty and is buried with her husband in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky (see ancillary images).
Mary Theresa Deppen (12/26/1845-12/16/1926) was the daughter of George Henry Deppen (1816-1879) who was the sister of Maria Theresia Deppen (7/11/1831-2/7/1904). Thus Mary Theresa was the niece of Maria Theresia.
