Description
The sampler has three rows of alphabets with the letters: "AMWSEB" on the next line. Under that are two rows of alphabets and numbers followed by two rows of somewhat decorative crossbands. Below these is the verse:
TWas in this genial month that we
Declared our nation to be free
And long we trust in its return
will evry patriotic bosom burn

The signature reads:
Sarah T Turner July 4th 1827

There are two simple, circumferential borders surrounding all of the above. Scattered motifs are senate the bottom, to the right of the verse and to the right of the AMWSEB. The piece is Z spun-ground and Z spun plied embroidery and is sewn onto a piece of canvas.

Sarah Thomas Turner was born on October 28, 1811, probably in Sumner County, Tennessee although by family oral history, Sarah's father, named Martin Turner, Jr, was a Baptist preacher who moved the family from Sumner County, Tennessee to Kentucky in 1809. Whether Sarah was born in Tennessee or Kentucky is unclear to AKS but we suspect Tennessee. When Sarah was born, her father, Martin Turner, Jr. (1773-1826), was thirty-eight years old and her mother, Elizabeth Martin (1787-1857)(m. 10/10/1810, Sumner County, Tennessee) was twenty-four. Her siblings included Ann Knight (“Annie”)(1813-ca. 1858), Susan B. (1814-ca. 1877), Martin Luther (1816-1826), John Calvin (1817-?), Dorothy Henley (1819-1891/7), Martha Crockett (1820-1851), William Claiborn (1821-1873), Elizabeth Jane (1823-1853), Rebecca M. (1824-1852), and Robert Williamson (1826-1878).

Circa 1827, Sarah Thomas Turner married Solomon Stanley Wilkerson (1802-1865) and their children included James Martin (1828-1905), William Cary (1830-1893), John Stanley (1832-1854), “E” (daughter)(ca. 1834-?), Peter M. (1836-?), Amanda E. (1837-1853), Ann Klisa (1839-1910), Francis Andrew (ca. 1840-?) Martha Jane (ca. 1850-?), and Sarah Elizabeth (1852-1872). The 1850 census shows Sarah continuing to live in Simpson County, Kentucky.

Sarah Thomas Turner died on February 20, 1853, in Simpson County, Kentucky, at the age of forty-one and was buried in the Turner Cemetery in Flat Rock, Simpson County, Kentucky (see ancillary images).
